Accepted Author Manuscript (AAM) | Peer-reviewed final version of an article, usually available immediately prior to publication. Where publishers allow Green Open Access, this is often the version of the article that can be submitted to an institutional repository such as MIRR. |
Article Processing Charge (APC) | Fee charged to an author, by a publisher, in order to publish their article open access. Open access articles are freely accessible to readers. A number of pre-paid APCs may be negotiated as part of Transformative Agreements between library consortia and publishers. See the Open Access Publishing Deals tab for details of current pre-paid APCs. |
Corresponding Author | Where there is more than one author, a corresponding author is designated to communicate with the publisher on behalf of all the authors. In order to avail of IReL pre-paid APCs, the corresponding author must be a current MIC student or staff member at the time the article is accepted. Ideally, corresponding authors will use their MIC email address for this communication. |
Gold Open Access | Articles published as Gold Open Access are immediately available and free to the user, at the time of publication. In order to avail of Gold Open Access publishing, authors are often charged an Article Processing Charge (APC) by the publisher. IReL's TAs include a specified number of pre-paid APCs for each year. |
Green Open Access | When Gold Open Access is not available, or authors cannot pay APCs, Green Open Access is an alternative. Articles are free to the user but usually have an initial embargo period. Articles are deposited to your institutional repository in the format of the Accepted Author Manuscript (AAM). Embargo periods for specific journals can be searched at Open Policy Finder. |
Hybrid Journal | A hybrid journal is a subscription-based journal that also includes Open Access content. Content becomes Open Access if an Article Processing Charge (APC) is paid to the publisher. |
Institutional Repository | An institutional repository is an archive for collecting, preserving and disseminating digital copies of the intellectual output of a HEI. In MIC, the institutional repository is MIRR. |
IReL |
IReL is the Irish Research e-Library, a consortium of Irish research libraries. Established in 2004, it provides participating member institutions with access to a wide range of licensed e-resources, open access publishing agreements with over twenty publishers, and open research infrastructure. IReL is hosted by Maynooth University. IReL has endorsed the NORF Action Plan, in particular its goal that by 2030 Ireland will have implemented a sustainable and inclusive course for achieving 100% open access to research publications. |
Transformative Agreement (TA) |
Transformative agreements aim to change the traditional purpose of agreements between libraries and publishers, which were based on recurring subscriptions that allowed library users to read content. Transformative agreements focus instead on read-access combined with open access publishing opportunities for the staff and students of library members. |
